Hi Christine,

I'm so so sorry to hear you're feeling so bad

Has Mr Harrison suggested that you have a body cast?

Don't worry, we can find out what's going on if he's supposed to have called you and hasn't - there's a service called PALS (the Patient Liaison Service) which we can help you contact if you are having trouble finding out.

Hang in there

Casting and Milwaukee braces until surgery at 10 - ant release/pos fusion T1-T12, halo traction. Post op cast and then TLSO. Further surgery at 18 (ant release/pos fusion extended to L3 to include lumbar curve, costoplasty) and 25 (another costoplasty). Fusion extended to L4 at 33 (XLIF with 4 pedicle screws and two short rods). Pre-op curves: 76(T) and 70(L). Post-op curves: 45(T) and 35(L). Diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome aged 34; scoliosis almost certainly due to this rather than being idiopathic.

It's unusual for adults to have casts but I remember seeing adults in casts at Stanmore a few years ago so it's not unheard of.

I guess there's a chance that you aren't fused fully yet, and the cast would make absolutely sure that your spine stays in place until it's solid. Did they say anymore about you going into Stanmore for a couple of weeks for tests, as they suggested before Christmas?

Chin up

I was in a plaster body cast for 3 months after my surgery when I was 17 - I just thought that's what everyone who'd had spinal surgery had to have. My guess is it's used to immobilise the spine to help fusion. I also had one a couple of years before that when I first got pain, as they thought it would help - it didn't. I have to say though, I couldn't wait to have them removed!

Has your surgeon explained why he wants you to have one?

You had your surgery a while ago correct? So is it possible that your fusion hasn't taken and that's what's causing the pain? I mean, if your spine is re-curving again with the rods in, thats surely going to cause pain? Can someone say?

Sorry I can't help much, but I hope Mr Harrison helps you
