Default Can mild scoliosis people do normal gym routine?

I am a 22 years old male with mild scoliosis, around 20 degree. I wanted to know that can I do gym like normal people do? Will exercise in gym especially weight bearing cause progression of my scoliosis curve? I am really anxious about this. Thanks a lot !!!

    Welcome to the forum!
You almost certainly can do normal things in the gym like anyone else.
But no, lifting weights will not cause your curve to progress. this is a myth that many are fooled by. Lifting weights in a way that could help strengthen your back might aid your curve to NOT progress, but this is not a certain given. but given your age and the degree it is at, i personally would say youre very unlikely to get a curve that is any bigger.

this is just what i know about the situation and shouldnt be taken for truth, due to not being a professional.

    All the best!

I mate. I have been operated on lots of years ago and have a deformity thats obvious to most people.
I go to a gym to try and make my back stronger hoping I will get less pain has a result. I think I have had slit susses in this but sometimes its hard to say.
I only used the machines weights. Every time I have tried to use the free weights I have ended up in a lot of pain.
I suppose everyone is diffract. If your going to use free weights then use a belt. And obviously if its coursing pain then stop.

I get out of breath faster then most when doing any sort of cardio but just do what I can. Just as long has your hart rate goes up and your able to keep it elevated for a wile then its still doing some good and helping to keep fit. I think when you have health problems its easy to stay away from placers like a gym but I think its more impotent for some to stay has fit has they can be.

I say go for it. If somethings not working for you there will always be something else that will that gets the same results.

Thanks so much for replying. I do not have significant back pain when I am doing gym though. But I have some mild back pain the second day due to little bit of muscle strain. Is it has anything to do with my scoliosis and it won't cause it's progression? Thank you

Like JayMoe said nobody can say if it will make it worse for you but I agree with him its more probably going to make it better not worse.
Your always going to get muscle aching the next day after a good gym session. That just means your working hard.

The main machine I use is the back extension machine. When I first started using it I did get some mild back pain.
I just lowered what I was doing, made sure I gave myself a day or two rest in between work outs and kept at it. After a few weeks the pain went and I was able to up the weight a bit.

If your in any doubt about making your self worse then go see your doctor and ask for there advice. That is what they are there for and am sure they will be happy to advice someone that's taking care of there health. Better to do that then take risks with your back. If nothing else it will put your mind as ease.

I'm fused. after an intense session playing squash, i hurt, not as much as i did when i first started though. Everyone will hurt after a good intense workout. its our muscles natural way of saying, please let me recover. Please dont worry about progression. As i said, from what i know and have learnt over the years here, lifting heavy things has been said to not make a curve get worse. You need to stick at it and things will get better once your muscles have got use to what you want to be doing. But please listen to your body and dont strain, as this is when you'll do something to yourself, but it wont make you progress. only your genes make you progress. i cant explain why some go worse than others, but it just happens. if you are to get worse its because your genes, not because of lifting heavy weights.

Please just live life as you are and dont worry. as youre young and have nothing to worry about. most of the progession happens during puberty and you are a fair bit older than that stage. As i said previously, i highly doubt you'll get wore than you currently are. but if you are worried. like bluey said, go to your GP and ask to see a specialist as they are the only people who can explisitly say if you have or havent and the likely hood of you doing so in the future.

I have always exercised, since I was 11 years old. My physiotherapist always told me: "If you have going to use weights, don't use them while standing up because you will put pressure in your vertebrae; however, you can lay down and do free weights that way." that's what I have always done.
