Re: Thoughts on schroth method?

I certainly wouldn't advise it for post-op treatment until you are fully fused, and an ethical practitioner wouldn't touch you until then anyway. I think Schroth can be a useful therapy for pain and...

Re: What do you guys do when you're felling really stiff

I would usually recommend heat in the form of heat pads, wheat bags, hot baths etc. however if you're stiff through inflammation (as post-op pain often is), heat can exacerbate pain. For pain caused...

Re: Worried I got fused early

At 6'3 you're jolly tall as it is :) my ex was about that height and it was a definitive disadvantage in many ways so I can only imagine that 6'7 would be a lot more difficult at times!

My arm span...

Re: Do you guys feel your rods?

You notice them at first because of the general stiffness and soreness associated with early recovery from such a huge operation. It does pass and whilst it's oretty common to be able to feel your...

Re: Nicol's latest problem

This happened to me - I have a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, which can be associated with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome that I also have. It is benign but unpleasant as I get...

Re: Worried I got fused early

Don't worry, at 19 and having already started puberty I very much doubt you were fused early. Remaining growth, if there is any at your age, would be in your limbs not your torso. There are plenty of...

Re: 6 month check-in after my fusion surgery for Scheuermann’s

You look wonderful Kay! Thanks for taking the time to do such a great write-up, it's bound to be useful for many people contemplating surgery in future :)

Re: Hmmm

Sorry to hear that Kara. Your foot surgery will be quite straightforward though and nothing like your spinal fusion, so you'll cope fine :)

Re: Addicted to pain meds?

You've articulated what I was too knackkered to properly put into words, Carol :) large amounts of some drugs (especially opiates) will cause a physical dependency but you shouldn't fret about this...

Re: Recovery so far

I agree with the others - that really is the most beautiful work of art! Your tattooist is an amazing artist, what talent. It's breathtaking! You must be so proud of it :D

Re: Nerves During Surgery

Thankfully they don't do the "Wake-up test" where they ask you to wiggle your toes in the middle of surgery anymore :D like Sparkles, I remember this happening. I thought I was still in the Pre-op...

Re: Another height question

This is something to discuss with your surgeon when you see them next, as no-one here can really answer it. Do you know when your next appointment is?

Re: Sleeping straight

No, don't worry about this - just sleep in whatever position is comfy for you and allows you to sleep best. There's nothing sleep position can do to change the shape of your spine and your post-op...

Re: Addicted to pain meds?

It is certainly possible to get addicted to pain meds, and other meds such as sleeping pills, as Jay says. Your prescribing doctor should be keeping an eye on what drugs they prescribe you, in order...

Re: Pen-grip / handwriting problems for those of us with joint hypermobility

Is it the angle you have your writing paper at - would a writing slope help at all? Many people with high fusions find it difficult to write with the paper flat on a table or desk as it can make...

Re: Athletics post surgery

Your lower back will be stiff if you've had it fused, but honestly you are most likely to adapt to this so well that you don't even notice it. I was playing hockey and fencing fused down to L3 and I...

Re: Athletics post surgery

Hiya, take a look at the "Things you CAN do with a fused spine" thread at the top of the forum. It's there to help reassure people who are worried that surgery will restrict them a lot. As you'll...

Re: Fentanyl patch itching like crazy

Yes sadly some people are sensitive to opiates, but there are lots of other types of drugs out there that can help you so don't fret unduly, there must be something out there that can help you....

Re: Fentanyl patch itching like crazy

Is the itch centred around the site of the fentanyl patch, or do you just itch in general?

It sounds as though you should call your doctor as this painkiller isn't right for you. Don't worry, there...

Re: Metal work heating up in hot weather?

I have an old-style Harrington Rod and don't have problems with the rod changing temperature. Body temperature is kept constant by homeostasis, so in theory it should be impossible for the rod to...

Re: More questions to keep you guys on your toes haha

Hiya,

The answer is YES! :) hardly anyone has a dead-straight spine. In fact, only curves of over ten degrees are considered to be Scoliosis - anything under that is considered normal. Since one of...

Re: Pain HELP

Hi Jonathan,

You need a doctor to recommend meds so none of us here can do that, but you might find that an ice pack or even just a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel pressed on the area will...
