New song I wrote about spinal fusion surgery

Hey people of SSO!

I haven't posted around here in quite a while, but I figured I would drop by and let you guys know about something kind of cool I wrote.

I had a 10-level fusion for kyphosis &...

Re: kyphosis pain level

I agree that rating this type of pain is difficult. Especially pre-op it tended to come and go depending on what I was doing, so sitting in the doctor's office it might be a 3-4, but after working on...

Re: Common misconceptions about spinal deformity

Ange, I think you misunderstand... my first goal is to use scientific rigor and academic research methods to substantiate all of the things we take to be "canon" here. Where it goes from there is...

Re: Protruding hardware?

I also have some prominent hardware, mostly at my kyphotic apex. There are about 8 screws I can feel, and they used to be really tender. Now at 8 months post-op, they're so much better. I can still...

Re: Common misconceptions about spinal deformity

Unfortunately I've experienced the same thing, Ange... some of my "friends" proved to be real losers when push came to shove.

Re: Common misconceptions about spinal deformity

(While of course anyone is free to discuss the surgical-nonsurgical debate, I hope I haven't diverted the conversation somewhere else, or incited some kind of argument, as this forum has seen in the...

Re: Common misconceptions about spinal deformity

Great input so far, thank you guys a bunch! Keep it coming!

Here's something I sat down and wrote the other day... If I ever end up writing a book on this subject (which I might, depending on how...

Common misconceptions about spinal deformity

Hello everyone,

I know I haven't been around here much in the past few months, but I've been with you all in spirit! :)

I'm starting this thread to see if we can brainstorm together and come up...

Re: 1 year post op

Congrats, Jenny! It is crazy to think how long it has been since we all had our surgeries... Mine was almost 8 months ago now!

Re: has anyone had to have their back broken in order to fuse it?

It's likely that they will be posterior Smith-Peterson or Ponte Osteotomies, basically where they remove the facet joints that connect the vertebrae to allow for compression of the kyphosis. It's...

Re: Sneezing?

When I sneeze, my head seems to lurch forward, with a painful "pulling sensation" at the top of my fusion (T4). So instead, I have to consciously remind myself to lean my head back a bit while...

Re: Flexeril vs. Valium

Hmm, 5mg of Flexeril knocks my ass out for 12 hours. (But then my mom takes 10mg and says she feels nothing?) I've found it to be the most helpful one (besides Valium) for controlling muscle...

Re: Yesterday was the worse day of my life!

Oh, that's awful! All the nerves, waiting, and counting down... I wouldn't have handled that very well.

Re: Surgical Pain Time

Well, I'm 6 months out now, and though I do still have some pain, it's MUCH less than what I had before surgery, which had gotten completely unmanageable by the time I "went under the knife."

As far...

Re: 6 month post op appt (at nearly 7 months ;p)

Great to hear you got cleared, although it's frustrating how the appointment worked out. I wonder if these people realize that while they see spinal deformity patients every day, we worry about these...

Re: muscle spasms after surgery

I definitely found that I had unusual pain and spasms in the period immediately after the surgery, especially on the side that got "stretched out." It should hopefully calm down soon. Just keep...

Re: back pain in the news

Yeah, I've had some people tell me that about "laser spine treatments" and other remedies that are simply irrelevant to deformity.

It's irritating because it almost sounds like they're saying "Oh, I...

I too have been paranoid about doing anything that might disrupt the fusion process, though I admit I have had far better luck (so far) than either of you. So sorry to hear of what you've been...

Re: Well, I'm going under the knife tomorrow.

Best of luck! I hope all went well and that you're putting up a good fight in recovery so far. No sugarcoating, it's not too fun in the beginning. But if you're tough and positive you'll make it!

Re: 6 months 6 month review appointment (at 7 months post-op ...)

That's great, Gilly! And that's wonderful that he has enough sense of humor to enjoy the cartoon. Hopefully you can get done with this healing fusion mess and move on! (I know I'm ready to.)

I...

Re: dressing to hide kyphosis

I had sort of an atypical kyphotic curve in that it was very low, so I was actually able to find shirts that would drape down off the apex and look okish. I would think finding things that look ok is...
