Re: Can S curves be straightened with a brace?

Yes bracing can be an effective treatment for small S curves. The intention is to stabilise the curve so that it doesn't get any worse until the patient stops growing. Bracing can straighten curves a...

Re: How about a SSO chatroom!?

I think facebook chat and msn etc perform that function. Lots of people here seem to share details and chat outside SSo.
Personally I stopped doing online chat years ago. It's a bit like crack -...

Re: My Miracle.

Hey Pops
It's hard to tell but your lumbar curve looks a tad straighter and your hair also looks nicer.
Oh and keep rolling around. On your ball.

Re: Kyphosis and chest deformities?

No it isn't odd to have scolio + PE without Marfans, as shown by you three ladies who have posted all in a row! :) It can't be that odd then can it?

Having aortic dilation + subluxated lenses...

Re: Kyphosis and chest deformities?

Hi Higgs

Many people can have PC and scoliosis without Marfans. Very few people with Marfans don't have subluxated lenses and a dilated aorta.

Although Marfans is autosomal dominant (you have a...

Re: Why did I have this surgery? It screwed my life up so bad. (PICTURE)

So sorry for you Rachel. Some people are damned if they have the op and others are damned if they don't.

Re: Hey everyone!

Hi

Another Marfan case, woohoo. There's been lots of folks here with a collection of attributes but not the dilated aorta or the subluxated lenses, the two clinchers for me.

Sorry to hear about...

Re: Tops riding up!!

Just tuck your shirt into your underpants. That's what my brother did when he was a young boy. Works a treat.

Disclaimer: my brother doesn't have scoliosis.

Re: To wear a Brace or not ?

Underlying conditions like Marfans syndrome can be a reason for not bracing - it has a much lower success rate.

Re: Newbie Intro and height questions?

Hi
I've lived in the UK and Australia and we often quote height in feet and inches even though both places are officially metric. It's just an old habit.
If your armspan is more than 5% greater than...

Re: rib hump

I agree with Toni. I've had kyphoscoliosis written at least once in my notes but I don't think I have the kyphosis element. I have lot of rotation which causes a large hump but this isn't the same...

Re: New member - few questions, general intro.

I came to the UK aged 27 and 363 days with an unoperated S curve of over 80/80. I stayed 10 years before returning home. I can't say pain was an ever an issue for me but cosmetically the curve got...

Re: 19 year old w/ Scoliosis - Exercises?

I wore a brace for 6 years until the end of high school. My curves got worse afterwards but they were already in the 80s when I got out of the brace so it was kinda inevitable. If your curves are...

Re: New in UK-what to begin with?

Hi Lena, I was once new to the UK too (I've since left). I found I had to check in to the GP and register with them before they'd even let me scratch myself, let alone get a referral.

Becky I used...

Re: Poll !!!!

Toni picked me up (she's like that :D) from a yahoo group scoliosis forum that had about 3 members way back in 2001 or 2002 I think.

She invited me to Slife. I transferred to SSo along with most...

Re: is low blood pressure linked to scolosis

Blood pressure does vary by age, gender and height. You may have other conditions that cause a raised or lowered BP but I don't think scoliosis is one of them.

Re: New member feeling brave

Wow, surgery for a narrowing of the aorta. I will most likely require surgery for the opposite (widening) which is a common problem in Marfans but I'd never heard of the opposite. Googling says the...

Re: My daughters back seems to be getting worse and she wears a brace.

Hi Kelly

It sounds like your daughter was measured at 11 degrees with the brace on and then again in Feb at 27 degrees with the brace on?

The purpose of a brace is to contain the curve, not...

Re: Cardiac problems?

I have large scoliosis and Marfans (but not kyphosis) and fortunately the curvature doesn't seem to have compromised my heart or lungs. They'll be looking at your aorta for signs of widening but I...

Re: Rib Hump only

When the sternum/ribs stick out it's called Pectus carinatum (commonly known as pigeon chest).

When the chest is caved in or sunken it's called Pectus excavatum (hollowed chest).

Pigeon chests...
