Scoliosis History

A few fields to allow you to share some of your scoliosis history if you want to.

What type of spinal curvature?:
Kyphoscoliosis
Diagnosis Details:
I have congenital scoliosis which was watched by my doctors through my adolescence. I have a butterfly vertebrae somewhere around T8 or T9 which causes me to have kyphoscoliosis. It's relitively mild and caused me no problems until 2008 when the neck aches began. Eventually I started having terrible back aches which, for a while were helped by the chiropractor but then even that didn't help. My lower back also began to have troubles, as the disc between my sacrum and L5 is very thin, and any quick bending would cause something to pull and I'd be in great pain. I learned how to bend with my knees quickly. In Dec of 2010 I had my regular check up with my orthopedics doctor and he told me that I would need surgery at some point. I could do it now or later, but that things would only get worse. My spinal cord was draping over the butterfly vertebrae and as my kyphosis worsened, it could also potentially damage my spinal cord.
What curve pattern?:
Other kyphosis with scoliosis
Curve Pattern Details:
The curve was mild but very acute and localized.
Had surgery?:
Posterior surgery
Surgery Details:
I was fused from T4-L1 with a partial resection of the butterfly vertebrae, correction of my kyphosis and a 90% decrease of my rib hump. My lower back also some how feels stronger and more supported now as well, even though no work was done there.
Worn a brace?:
SpineCor
Bracing Details:
I found a video about SpineCor. So, in March of 2011 I got one of their braces and it relieved all of my pain. For a while, at least. The brace would work, and then start causing pain until we re-configured the straps and then I'd be good again for a while. All in all, i did reduce the angles of my kyphosis and scoliosis and improved my posture a bit, but, the pain kept coming back. I discontinued the brace in Feb 2012. I realized that with congenital scoliosis, you can't hope for much correction by posture changes .
