Scoliosis History

A few fields to allow you to share some of your scoliosis history if you want to.

What type of spinal curvature?:
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Diagnosis Details:
I was diagnosed just after I turned 14 in March 2001. I was screened for scoliosis at my pre-school medical when I was 4 and - being a curious parent - my mum asked the nurse what she was checking for as mum had never seen the bend over test or heard of scoliosis.

She found my scoliosis when we were messing around one day and she noticed my back wasn't symmetrical. At the time, I was less than impressed, but now I'm incredibly grateful she noticed and did something about it.
What curve pattern?:
Double major
Curve Pattern Details:
I have/had a typically patterned S curve: thoracic curvature to the left, lumbar to the right, which of course threw out my shoulders, ribs, spine and hips.
Had surgery?:
Anterior surgery
Surgery Details:
I was first offered surgery in 2003 when I was 16 and I declined. In the UK, at age 16 you are responsible for giving consent for elective surgeries. I didn't refuse through stubbornness, I wanted to wait another 2 years until I had taken my A levels and was at a logical point in my education to take a year off to make sure I was fully recovered and ready to move to university.

Surgery eventually took place on 16th July 2005 and I was discharged from hospital just under a week later. I was fused T11 to L3 by Mr Stewart Tucker at the RNOH Stanmore and was allowed to drive at 7 weeks. I was swimming again a week later and riding a week after that. I was released for all activities in March 2006 (skiied for the first time in January 2007) and officially discharged from hospital almost exactly two years after my surgery date.

I haven't looked back, if you have any questions about my surgeon or surgery, just ask.
Worn a brace?:
TLSO brace (eg Boston brace)
Bracing Details:
I was braced from three months after diagnosis in March 2001 until February 2003. I had to wear my brace for 16 hours/day and from what I've heard, this isn't terribly common. I'm pretty sure that the reason I wasn't in it 24/7 or 23/7 is because my surgeon never intended for it to be correctional, but for it to stabilise my curves during the remainder of my growth. This worked quite well and allowed us to postpone surgery for a few years without having to worry about my curve suddenly getting bigger. I was monitored at least every six months whilst I was braced.

I was very self-conscious about my brace and only wore it out of the house if I had to wear it to go and see my surgeon. During this period of my treatment, I didn't tell any of my friends about my scoliosis, I didn't want to be treated any differently by my peers (I already was for being intelligent) and also didn't want to have to explain it to them.

I wasn't braced following surgery, I was given a fabric corset with metal bones in it.

Diagnosed in March 2001 by family GP after my mum noticed an asymmetry in my spine. Referred to a consultant at the RNOH, Stanmore and started attending consultations for x-rays twice a year. Prescribed a TLSO brace to be worn 16 hours per day. Began with double major curves at approx 48 degrees. Offered surgery in 2003 aged 16 and declined to continue with school. Requested surgery in 2005 instead. Had T11-L3 fused on 16th July 2005 and haven't looked back! Released for all activities in March 2006, having been driving and riding horses with consultant's permission since 7 weeks post op.
