View Full Version : Just what we expected.

Today we had our specialist's appt. with the orthopaedic surgeon. He was such a breath of fresh air. Even though his waiting room was bursting, he had plenty of time to answer all our questions and to give us the information we needed. As you all may be aware, we have our daughter in a Spinecor brace fitted by Dr. Rivard and Dr. Colliard in Montreal. This doctor was fine with that. He confirmed that the best we could hope for is to maintain her curves at their current levels. She has a fairly well balanced curve of 46 and 38 degrees. He is fine with her wearing the Spinecor even though he would normally prescribe a hard brace. As we already suspected (and our research confirms) we really aren't going to know the outcome for our daughter until she had a growth spurt. He also said because compliance is such an issue with the hard braces, if we are fine with the Spinecor then he will continue to follow our daughter here in Ontario. We discussed the fact that bracing (no matter what kind) really has no guarantee. He actually had my daughter do the bend over and back tests, as well as looked at her spine. We booked another appointment with him for after our Montreal visit in May. He also is happy with the xrays we brought with us and said that he had no problem with reviewing the xrays from St. Justine's in Montreal. All in all a good visit and not upsetting to our daughter. Well that's excellent news all round - why can't all of them be like that? :D

That's fantastic news :) It must be such a relief, and as Gilly says, a shame they can't all be like that.

How nice to find a supportive doctor who takes time! We have to tag team ours and stand in front of the door so she doesn't leave before answering our questions! My daughter was in a Spinecor until she got into the 40 degrees (approximately), then we switched to the Rigo-Cheneau. She was just progressing too rapidly for the Spinecor, but it was a wonderful brace, especially when she had to start wearing it at 6! We travel 12 hours by car to the Washington DC area in the States for the Cheneau, but it's worth it. It's very comfortable for a rigid brace and very aggressive.
