It's not entirely clear from the article to what extent this would apply to chronic pain, but I think many of us have personal experience of our perception of our pain being strongly affected by mood. It's interesting, anyway:

There definitely is some sense in this because anxiety and worrying about pain just makes it worse. Meditatation can be hard though when you're in too much pain. I think it takes alot of practice.

thats very interesting :) i do find that when im in a bad mood, my back hurts more, but i thought that the cause and effect could be the other way around, with pain affecting my mood... :p

That sounds reasonable to me. After the first of the year I am going to be looking for a meditation class. Thanks Titch!

Interesting stuff Titch. I think most of us can relate to our pain being worse if we're stressed or anxious, so I suppose it makes sense that it could work the other way round.

I read an online article last week linking transcendental meditation practice with a reduction in heart disease as well. I guess that makes sense too. This is the link if interested: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1228375/Meditation-cut-risk-heart-attacks-47--new-study-shows.html

I used to do TM many years ago, so maybe I should start again and see if it reduces my back pain! :)
