View Full Version : Finally Amazeng Xrays
14th October 2004, 02:14 AM
You are all invited and welcome to view my x-rays. ( They are Amazeng x-rays only because my last name is Eng and its sort of a joke around here about me being Amazeng or Amazed.and it all began with a Halloweeen costume.) Anyways - With a lot of help I finally posted my x-rays. I feel almost naked showing them to everyonebut its time I finally own this disease and not let it own me. They will graphically portray why one should NOT wait to get some intervention either surgically or bracing. I should have been much more aggressive and aware. I kept just letting doctors say "it shouldn't give you any trouble" or my favorite,"it doesn't hurt". I became very jaded and didn't beleive other doctors later who said they might be able to help me because I wanted a 100% guaranteed outcome. (Plus I was bullet-proof and invincible.) Current numbers are 150 - 88 - 50 That's as accurate as we get. I guess that it's difficult to measure because I don't just curve, I also torque around. In any case I'm walking and talking. I have a fair amount of pain but I don't breathe very well.

Thank you so much for posting these! Your xrays are a great addition to this site. I can't believe doctors said you didn't have to do anything about it...

Thank you Jean for posting the x rays.I've always been a little bit annoyed for having my spine fused at 110/120 degrees and now I just think it's better to have done it. I was quite surprised at how quickly the curve deteriorated over the initial six month period. Also it's a good lesson to learn that just because you've finished growing it doesn't mean that the curve stops progressing then.
Is it idiopathic or congenital? I can't recall if you've said.I am stunned that a case of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis could travel so far.In my case i always assumed I'd had a huge curve because it started as a baby

As far as congenital or idiopathic Doctors have said both. Far and away the best guess is Idiopathic. (Funny that's close to idiot.) I would also comment that "the Grand Poohbah" says although it appeared at age 13 almost 14 that he considers it Juvenile because I was so late starting menstruation and breast development at almost 17years. We are also adamant that I had no curve until 1965. I was absolutely straight in early family photos.

I'd guess idiopathic.........there doesn't seem to be any vertebral abnormality but I guess only a doctor can be sure.I've been enlarging the x rays to see the actual curve measurements on the x rays and you had a fairly harmless looking curve at the start......I'm still stunned at the rate of progression.it's the first case of true Kyphoscoliosis we've seen here on SSO, although sarah's x rays would be interesting to see too.Congenital scoliosis is not considered to be strongly inherited but adolescent/juvenile would be.
Can you tell me what the measurement of your 1967 curve is?That looks exactly like mine does now.I'm just very curious.

Those really are amazing x-rays Jean! Thank you so much for sharing them. I'm so sorry that you've ended up with such severe curves though :-(

In June 1965 curves were 68 and 33
Dec 1965 curves were 84 and 52
June 1966 curves were 99 and 52
March 1967 curves were 111 and 65
1974 curves were 126, 52 and 54
2004 curves are 150, 88 and 50
14th October 2004, 05:15 PM
my goodness.....they went up from 68 - 84 and 33 - 52 inside 6mths!
What did the Doc say at that time....like why wouldnt they operate?

If you ever need a firing squad for your original consultant allow me to be the first to volunteer.
I feel the same about my first doc, although I believe he's since passed away.........
14th October 2004, 05:52 PM
I'll be the second to volunteer! It's crazy that you were never treated. I can't believe no one operated in 1965! Wow.
14th October 2004, 06:16 PM
Wow! I can't believe nobody wanted to help you! That's just crazy! Your x-rays make me really want to get jumping on the idea of surgery. I think that's what you were trying to accomplish...if so, you did it. Is there nothing they can do now? Is it past the point of safely doing anything? Your x-rays make my curves of 50 and 30 look non-existent! I'm so sorry. :squeeze:

Okay you guys we can't kill the guy He's already dead. I had nothing to do with it!
I don't know why he just wanted to watch it. I also have no idea why he thought remove a front rib so it wouldn't poke into my hips - he sent me to a pulmonolgist and he wanted to shave off some of my right hip. All because I said I was sore where my ribs were poking into my hip. We asked if there was nothing else to be done and they were still in the "It doesn't hurt, and It won't progress" song and dance. Remember it was 1965 there weren't scoliosis specialists everywhere and besides you you just did what the doctor told you. My parents weren't about to question a "DOCTOR". I am to blame for doing nothing after 1975 and Mayo clinic said they would do surgery but couldn't offer any guarantees -they also thought that I would be hospitalized or flat on my back for at least 18mths to 2 years. I just couldn't do it. (Bullet-proof and invincible) Also newly married and happy happy. In just two short years I was also pregnant pregnant! And then I was BUSY!

I'm speechless. I ... wow. Your xrays say it all, don't they? I hope anybody on the fence about surgery is paying attention here. This is a valuable lesson to all of us.
