I came across a reference to Maritza Correia, a member of the US swimming team at the Olympics, who took up swimming on the advice of a doctor when she was diagnosed with scoliosis (curve of 15 degrees) at the age of seven:

She seems to be a very impressive swimmer but was replaced by Jenny Thompson in the final of her event, the 400 metre freestyle relay in which the US won silver (She had beaten Thompson in the trials).

I should have mentioned that Maritza did win a silver medal in the freestyle relay, she just didn't swim in the final.

Not only does she have scoliosis, two other members of the womens US olympic swim team also have it, Lindsay Benko and Kristen Calvery. Articles about Benko say that she wore a neck to waist brace as a teenager (Milwaukee?). Calvery has chronic problems with her back.

Wow, you're right. I found this about Lindsay Benks:
"In junior high, Benko grew so fast that she developed scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. She wore a waist-to-neck body brace to correct the problem. Benko experienced more back problems in 1998, and still undergoes therapy. She says that degenerative discs in her lower spine will leave her with back problems all her life, but massage therapy and Pilates have helped her cope."

Every one of us has perfect bits and imperfections. But I don't think scoliosis is an imperfection at all. It only makes us stronger and gets us new friends. group hug! :squeeze:

Back to Olympic swimmers with scoliosis... this is a wonderful boost to anyone who thinks their minor scoliosis will stop them doing anything, even strenuous back-intensive sports like swimming!
