Well, will the fun times never cease ???? :-?

Deirdre complained a week and a half ago of a sore throat, and I
didn't think much of it because my son had a sore throat a few days
before and it looked like whatever he had was just making it's
rounds. The sore throat lasted about three days and the funny thing
about it was that it wasn't accompanied by sniffles or
coughing/sneezing. On Tuesday, Dylan (my son) comes to me and and
says Deirdre's fingers are peeling ! I took one look at her fingers
and thought it was some kind of allergic reaction to the nail polish
she had applied on the weekend - her fingers were raw and red ! So I
do a search on Google and find all these references to allergies -
she has always had some kind of eczema after eating chocolate or
gummy bears, so I thought "NO BIG DEAL !!" Thursday, the fingers
show no sign of improvement, I call the doctors office and make an
appointment, they couldn't see us until the next day. So I do another
search on Google and find a remote out of the way note on a
correlation between strep throat and fingers peeling ! I did a
further search and saw pictures of what strep throat looks like - not
pretty !! I then asked Deirdre to stick out her tongue and my heart
sank, it looked like the pictures I saw on the internet !! I rush
her down to Sick Kids and the nurse took all the information and no
one believed me that she had strep. When the doctor finally took a
look at Deirdre he told me that my diagnosis was correct and that she
had progressed to SCARLET FEVER !!!!!!! He said that in the old days
before penicillin, children died of scarlet fever! Apparently, strep
throat can progress not only to scarlet fever but to rheumatic fever
which is quite serious because it can cause permanent heart and
kidney damage. :-o Fun and games, huh ?

I hope Deirdre feels better soon!

If it helps to know at all, I've had scarlet fever twice and I'm just fine right now. I think it's one of those things that, if caught early enough, is easy to treat now.

You must have gotten an awful fright, how is Deirdre feeling now.
My sis had scarlet fever when we were kids and she got over it really quickly, once she got the right antibiotics.
Hope you are all doing better now

Sorry to hear this Sealy - that must have been really frightening. I think i would have panicked at peeling fingers! Strep isn't something i've come across very often so i dont' really know what it is. I kind of thought scarlet fever was something that was very rare now.

Glad to hear you got treatment for her and hope she's on the mend.

Thanks to everyone who responded ! The strange thing with Deirdre is that the few times she gets ill, it's FULL BLOWN. I'm thinking of the scoliosis - SEVERE !! The time she contracted chicken pox....virtually EVERY inch of her body was covered in spots, even her eyeball ! We had to take her to Emergency because this is very dangerous. So now with strep, it's like FULL BLOWN !!!! If we had waited a little longer, she may have developed rheumatic fever ! In general, she is a very healthy girl and this is the very first time she has been on antibiotics. Deirdre is doing really well right now. I have to get the toothbrush heads replaced because the bacteria may harbor in there long after the antibiotic treatment is over and re-infect her.

I just found out this morning that my son Dylan has strep as well but it's not manifesting itself in such an extreme form as Deirdre's. I'm not feeling too hot myself, so I'll probably get myself checked out :-(

I hope everyone is doing well and that 2006 is shaping up to be a great year for you !

 What a horrible fright! I'm so glad that she's on the mend and that Dylan hasn't come down fully with it. Fingers crossed that you don't get too ill

You better keep an eye on her as she gets older :P

Wow. That is scary. I didn't know strep could turn into scarlet fever. I am glad you caught it before it got even worse.

Thanks guys !! We're all better :rox: The strep and scarlet fever are quickly becoming a distant memory.
