He pulled the chest drain ? :-o  Doesn't a LOT of blood flow through there ?? I'm happy to hear everything is going well...I know he was very nervous about this op.

BeckyH
19th October 2005, 03:50 PM
chest drains are to remove fluid from the cavity around your lungs and make sure it doesn't gather in your chest so that said fluid doesn't compromise your breathing. i don't think blood comes out of it sealy, because if there were blood that *could* mean you were bleeding internally...when your drain is removing less than a certain amount of fluid per day then it's ready to come out and you mobilise

Lizzie89
19th October 2005, 04:25 PM

I saw John earlier today, and while the bad night had clearly taken a toll on him, it was good to see that he felt well enough to put a brave face on things. I didn't stay for too long because unsurprisingly he was very tired and started getting sleepy quite quickly, but he was looking good. And I might note that even after this long surgery and the tribulations following it, I would not have put him down for 36!

He's clearly been quite significantly re-modeled - as most of us who have had a significant kyphosis correction know, it takes a while to get used to the whole thing of having your stomach feeling like it is stuck out, and for your ribs to settle to their new position. I mentioned to him that after my revision, I had felt as though someone had stuck a massive bolster pillow under the back of my waist, and he agreed on this. It's a feeling that goes though as you get used to it.

All in all, while it's going to be a job to recover, I'm sure he's going to do brilliantly, and he's in great hands with Des :-)

BeckyH

i'd agree with titch, a few weeks after surgery i thought something was horribly wrong, but then i realised a spine is supposed to be flat and not have a rotation in it and that i was actually "normal" after almost 5 years. it's bizarre, but you learn to like it

i'm exhausted - i just drove all the way home, 3 hours ugh. um well i got lost on the way to the hospital - couldn't figure out how to get into it. made it eventually then couldn't find bloody west block. finally did and found where john was. he didn't look as tired as i thought he would - was very appreciative of the copy of Heat that i took him :D and the nurse laughed that i'd taken him a colouring book :-( but he liked the look of the cake and so does des (they're both still alive so they obviously haven't tried it yet). john was drinking tea through a straw and i pointed out that the only thing he was missing was cocktail umbrellas. oh yeah and when he pulled his chest drain out twice? he also pulled his catheter out  which he doesn't remember doing. when i was there the doctor had to stitch his drain back in because it had leaked twice yesterday (they stitched it back in without giving him any anaesthetic which he was a bit upset at but i pointed out that he's hardcore now and doesn't need anaesthetic :D) i'm sure there's stuff i've forgotten...oh yeah - he's been hallucinating on the morphine :glee: and has been sent flowers which he's not allowed in his ward

i got a couple of texts from des today: the drain came out at lunch time (good news) and john ate lunch (even better - i have to say the food looked a bit grim, especially next to my amazing cake)

i told john off for terrifying us - part of the time we were waiting was because he spent a whopping six hours in recovery. oh and i know he's hallucinating because he told me i was thin :D

so there endeth the report...oh and i'm angry that petrol is cheaper in nottingham than it is here  and i took two pictures which i'll post when i can find the USB cable for my camera

BeckyH
22nd October 2005, 05:03 PM
i knew i'd forget something: when i saw john in bed i thought his back looked really straight, and he seemed to by lying nicely, so looks like he got a good correction out of his marathon...dammit there was something else and i've forgotten again. clearly surgery eradicated my capacity to remember things

Abbi

Thanks for the update becky! :niceone: I am glad John is doing better, and he is eating! I hope you encouraged him to eat it all....as it will do him the world of good! (I know thats rich coming from me...cos I barely ate anything when I was in hospital)

6hours in recovery is an awful long time!! Oh and the flower thing....I wasn't allowed any either (I dont really understand that - but hey!)

He pulled his cathater out....my goodness, that is incredible....(not in a good way tho) I don't think I could move much on my first few days!

Thanks again Becky! Hope John continues to get a lot better! :D

Fingers crossed its just a reaction to the surgery - the raised temperature from that can take a couple (or more) days to really kick in. They thought that I had an infection, kept taking blood to check my inflammatory markers and had me on IV vancomycin for 3 days before eventually deciding it actually wasn't. So, hoping it's similar for you John, that it sorts itself out without significant intervention.

The good thing is that they are on top of it, and look out for things like this and catch them early :-)

Sitting in a chair for the first time is a huge step forward - up and about before you know it :D

UPDATE

received a message from des while SSO was down today:

"john told release will be friday!! but he is saying no, he is saying monday! watch this space. D x"

friday would be FANTASTIC going seeing as he was told the middle of next week when i visited. i don't understand all these people who don't want to leave (there was a girl who was saying that when i was in hospital) though i can understand it slightly coming from john who has had mega surgery. i hope he's well enough and can be persuaded to leave the maid service, i'm still convinced he'll feel even better once home

titch
26th October 2005, 05:34 PM
It's a combination of the extent of the surgery, not bouncing back as fast because of age, and sheer distance that needs to be travelled to get home. When I was in for my revision, all I wanted was to go home, but I was terrified of being sent home before I was ready.

If I'd live nearby, like I did for my first surgery, I'd have been raring to go.

Anyway, I'm really glad to hear he's making such good progress - fantastic news :D

BeckyH
26th October 2005, 05:36 PM
yeah i can see what you mean, titch. i have a funny feeling that if he stays in for the weekend though they won't discharge him until monday and he might get itchy feet. meh, i guess we just wait and see :-) i'm sure des would be relieved for them to be home in a way

um...he's not home. he's probably getting released tomorrow - he was in a bit of pain and feeling a bit stiff today so they decided to keep him in. the cynic in me thinks they're trying to get him out ASAP because he IS a lot better and they probably want the bed. we'll have to wait and see
